History Of This Club

The Baltusrol Clubhouse design is similar to the British home.

In 1989, Golf Magazine praised the Clubhouse as the “second best in the world.”

Louis Keller established Baltusrol and changed it from an old farmhouse into the first Clubhouse. This farmhouse was used for over a decade.

Many members were bothered and considered it a firetrap. Their thoughts were right as the house burnt at midnight in 1909; it began in the kitchen. Thankfully, the fire outbreak did not cause major injury, and no lives were lost.

After the incident, the cost of building a new Clubhouse was publicized, and its worth was $50,000.

A member of Baltusrol, Chester H. Kirk, an educated architect, designed the new project (Clubhouse).

On May 19, 1909, the Clubhouse project was approved.

T Charles L. Bell, the contractor, began work to complete the project within six months. By December, the building was accomplished. The actual cost was $100,000, while $60,000 covered insurance for the old Clubhouse.

The original materials used for building the Clubhouse are the same to date, except the roof has been changed.

The primary plans were;

  • On the North Façade, a driveway links the main block with the women’s locker room, formerly the squash courts.
  • The Finger Plan has a rectangular core and wide service wings.
  • On the South Façade, a one-story crenelated flat roofed measurement from the main buildings.

In 1927, Architect Edward C. Epple designed the Grill. Renovations were made to the Clubhouse by Clifford Wende Hack, a renowned architect.

Golf Course

The game of golf has been played at Baltusrol for over 120 years. The first game 1took place on the nine-hole course formerly known as the ‘Old Course’ of 1895. The Upper and Lower Courses were designed and laid out by A.W. Tillinghast from 1918 to 1922.

The history and evolvement of golf at Baltusrol are always reflected in the history of golf in America. The game has improved from the gutty golf balls and hickey shafts to multi-piece balls and lightweight graphite shafts.

The Club had two courses(Dual Course) in 1922, thanks to Tillinghast. The courses were designed to work side by side at the same time.

The Dual Course was a history made in golf and Tillinghast Career.

Tillinghast’s work at Baltusrol was declared a National Historic Landmark by the United States Department of the Interior’s National Park Service. The State of New Jersey and Federal Registers of Historic Places listed Baltusrol.

The Upper and Lower Courses are ranked in the top 100 Courses in America by Golf Magazine, Digest, and Golf Week.
