What Is The History Of Chicago Golf Club?

In 1888, Macdonald, his friend C. B. Farwell, and his son-in-law, Hobart Chatfield Taylor, made seven unofficial holes on his friend Farwell’s Lake Forest, known as ‘Bluff’s Edge.

His friends were intrigued by the game and requested that a new course be made on a specified site. Macdonald got contributions from his friends ($10 each), which summed to $223 in 1892. He used the money to build a nine-hole course on the Stock Farm of A. Haddow Smith at Belmont, north of Chicago.

Proudly, in the 1890s, a member of the Chicago Golf Club produced the first American woman, Margaret Abbott, to win an Olympic game.

The Club gained more popularity after Macdonald released his book. Later on, 200 acres were purchased to build an 18-hole course. Renowned Chicago architect Jarvis Hunt designed the Chicago clubhouse.

On holidays and weekends, many Club members came to the Club and were offered a memorable service, including a car used for transporting themselves to different holes. The car club was parked by the side until when needed for evening returns.

Current members include Cleveland Golf founder Roger Cleveland, former ServiceMaster chief executive Jonathan P. Ward, and former Amoco chairman H. Laurence Fuller.

In 2001, the Golf Club admitted its first female member, Judith Whinfrey. Charles Thurston, the first African-American, was inducted into the Club in 1993.
