Marvin Leonard founded the Colonial Country Club in 1936Marvin Leonard.  He was interested in bringing Fort Worth, his hometown, bentgrass greens.  Bentgrass is now found on the greens and fairway.  His original plans were to install this on an existing golf course but it failed.  This is when he thought about the idea of building a new golf course, which became Colonial.  In 1936, his vision dream came to fruition when the club first opened with 100 members.

He started talks with the United States Golf Association (USGA) in the late 1930s to have the U. S. Open at his new country club.  Colonial was awarded the ability to have the 1941 tournament after he guaranteed the USGA $25,000.    Marvin Leonard attempted to sell the Colonial to all members but failed.  When he eventually was able to sell the Colonial to its members in 1942, the name was changed to Colonial Country Club.

Golf Course

The golf course was designed by Perry Maxwell or Oklahoma and John Bredemus of Texas.  The course is  a par-70 with 7,290 yards but in 1941, the was only 7,035 yards, which at that time was long for that time period.  The golf club is surrounded by a neighboring residential area and on the northern edge by the Trinity River.

The Colonial Country Club also hosts three major professional golf events in addition to the annual PGA Tour event.

  • U. S. Women’s Open 1991
  • U. S. Open 1941
  • Tournament Players Championship 1975

Ben Hogan is the most noteworthy winner of The Colonial Golf Tournament, which he won five times.  The nickname Hogan’s Alley was added to the course.  In the country club in the front room is a portrait of him surrounded by some of his most prized possessions.  This includes his five championship trophies.

In 2022, there will be a $20 million renovation project done on the Colonial Country Club with a grand opening celebration in 2023.  It will be directed by Gil Hanse and include new bunkers, a state-of-the-art irrigation system, new tees, along with new green complexes.
